Akanksha Singh is Recruitment Leader for Software & Research Labs, IBM India and South Asia and is responsible for talent acquisition and delivery. Key areas of focus is to hire top talent for labs from across the globe, managing client relationships, engaging with different sourcing channels including social media, managing labs hiring objectives, create delivery models.
What is your background as a Recruiter with IBM?
I started my career with IBM as a trainee and moved on to support hiring for different business units as Recruiter before taking up a lead role with Global Business Services (GBS). I have done major hiring for GBS business unit for most of the skills e.g. Mainframes, SAP, Oracle, AMS etc. In my current role of Recruitment Leader for Software and Research Labs I am responsible for overall strategy planning for hiring resources into Labs.
What would you say makes IBM a great place for women to work?
IBM has been acknowledged as a world leader in its commitment to women. One of the key diversity focus areas for IBM in India is the advancement of women, to understand their needs to help and support them as to make them productive at work and balance their family and personal obligations.
IBM’s senior management have set up India Diversity Council — Indian Women’s Leadership Council (IWLC). In addition, there are IBM Club activities and Corporate Social Responsibility activities which are especially designed for women. We have a wide-set of development, mentoring and a comprehensive set of leadership development resources that help promising women employees develop their careers and leadership skills at IBM.
Why it’s important to bring more women into the workforce?
With women employees bringing in diversity to the workforce, organization gets more perspectives with a larger variety of options to consider, and chances of having innovative solutions proposed. It’s an acknowledged fact that diversity at the workplace is not only good but also has a profound influence on the operations of an organization. The best ideas flourish in a diverse environment, and companies benefit from accessing female talent.

What advice would you give to candidates?
IBM conducts diversity orientation sessions prior to their joining. All women candidates must make best utilization of this opportunity to gain more knowledge about IBM and its offering for women. And once they join in as employees, they should avail these trainings and benefits of the programs wherever applicable. Women should also ensure they take time off from their busy work schedules and allocate time to professionally network with other women professionals.
