Three distinguished IBMers have recently participated in Google hangout sessions to give insights into their role at IBM, their background and why they love working at IBM.
The first session saw Silvia Bianchi (Researcher of Social Data Analytics – Cognitive Computing) tell us about her background and her journey to gain her PhD in Computer Science. Sylvia undertook an internship around this time and told us how valuable she found it and the importance of developing your skills. Silvia is incredibly passionate about working at IBM and talks of the brilliant work life balance she has been able to establish in her role.
Silvia’s role means that she was heavily involved in the Analytics of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil and used Twitter data to track the sentiment of the crowds in particular games. Sylvia also answered questions from the viewers and told us how much she enjoys working with IBMers all over the world in a creative and collaborative environment.

She also talks of turning the impossible into the possible and how her attitude has enabled her to succeed.
Cloud, Analytics, Mobile, Social and Security are all incredibly exciting areas within the tech industry that are growing rapidly, and Julie shares her views on the digital revolution and where she and the rest of IBM fit into it.
As a mother, Julie acknowledges that she is given a lot of support and flexibility from IBM and the opportunities for women are fantastic. She particularly references our CEO Ginni Rometty for being recognised as number one on Fortune’s Most Powerful Women in Business Award 2014 .

Our third hangout session was with Catherine (Irene) Loya-Navarro, Country Sales and Delivery Leader for Software Services for IBM Systems in the Philippines. From a young age Irene has had a love for maths and science which led her towards a career in the IT industry.
In the Philippines, like many other countries, IBM has established a Women’s network with the aim of bringing female IBMers together for education, training and networking events. Irene has been involved in the Philippines network and talked greatly of its importance.
Irene also shared with us her top tips for women entering the IT industry:
- Understand what it is you want to do.
- Find out what your strengths are.
- Build a broad understanding of the technology industry.
- Once you have got this broad understanding, deepen your knowledge in the area you wish to pursue.
Irene delivered a real insight into the world of IBM and how she has got to where she is today. To find out more about Irene and her journey, please watch the hangout session below:
