In April 2017, IBM hosted the first ever Tech Inclusion Summit in Mexico City, co-sponsored by Lesbians Who Tech. Some of the biggest companies in the high-tech industry came together with one main goal – to espouse a more inclusive society for LGBT+ women in technology.
The objective of the Summit was to bring together hundreds of lesbians, queer women, and allies across all areas of technology. The agenda included topics like Mobile, Cybersecurity, Big Data, Health Tech, Finance Tech, Software Engineering, Inclusion, Design, and Space Tech & Science; and activities included networking sessions and talks about career growth and leadership development.
For Isabel Romo, Diversity Engagement Partner at IBM Mexico, the summit “is one of the many steps we will be taking together with Lesbians Who Tech for a more inclusive and diverse world for LGBT Women, and women in tech”.
At the heart of the summit was a deep commitment to women in tech, and LGBT+ women. We wanted to showcase top technical talent who are changing the world, and happen to be LGBT+ women. Our stage was an opportunity for people in the LGBT+ community to have a voice and share their success stories with the IBMers and the world. We had 24 first-level speakers including entrepreneurs, activists, influencers, technologists, Diversity & Inclusion professionals, and more amazing members of the LGBT+ community. 122 participants from 41 different companies, organizations, and NGOs spent the day at the IBM office, sharing their thoughts in an inclusive and open environment.
Noga Tavor, Tel Aviv City Director for Lesbians Who Tech, talks about how the summit was “an amazing milestone for diversity and inclusion in the tech world. I have no doubt that this will resonate with the summit attendees for years to come.”
This first Tech Inclusion Summit gave us the opportunity to inspire diversity in STEM careers, while ensuring that there are examples, role models, and mentors for the LGBT+ community who can encourage bright minds and demonstrate that everything is possible.
