Master@IBM is a student programme in the DACH region that combines obtaining a Master’s degree alongside a practical view working within IBM. Veronika Winkler works 80% of her time at the iX studio in Hamburg, Germany while also completing her post-graduate degree at the Berlin University of Arts. In this article, Veronika shares her Master@IBM experience with us.
By Veronika Winkler
Before starting on my Master@IBM programme, I have always been interested in new and digital technologies. Having obtained my Bachelor’s in Product Design, I was really excited to work with IBM and their ground-breaking technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things, or Blockchain technology. The Master@IBM programme is the perfect opportunity for me to get professional training on Design Thinking, agile development and gain consulting experience.
The application process for the programme was well-paced and friendly. I applied online via the IBM website (http://ibm.com/jobs/de/master) and had a very quick response with interview details and an invitation for an Assessment Centre.
Role @ IBM Design
As a Visual Designer, I create digital interfaces and support the design team at the iX studio – an interdisciplinary department, where Design Thinking is practiced. With this approach, we support our customers to master upcoming digital challenges. The thing I enjoy most about the role is that I get to contribute my ideas and designs for new software solutions.
Looking to the Future
My experience in IBM exposes me to a lot of IT expertise. This works great for me especially because I want to broaden my knowledge in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for my Master thesis and IBM has a lot of expertise in this area. I believe that AI will have a huge impact on our society, our culture and existing business models in the future. As a result of this, I really enjoy getting in contact with technical experts and exchanging insights with them. After my thesis, I see myself working in a position that designs for AI. Therefore, I am happy to gain such knowledge of how new technologies connect with new business models.
Any advice for those considering joining IBM in general/Master@IBM?
In my opinion, the Master@IBM program is a great way to get an impression of IBM while gaining insight into many digital trends and topics. Combining an academic Master’s degree with on-the-job training is a valuable experience for young professionals with a passion for digital transformation.
