Each February, GradConnection partners with Fusion Graduate Consultancy to host the Top100 Graduate Employers and Future Leaders competition in Australia. The awards bring together everyone involved in the graduate recruitment industry in the country including employers, universities and students for one of the biggest nights of the year.
IBM was announced as the Most Popular Technology Employer for the second consecutive year, and named as a finalist for the Most Popular Graduate and Internship Employer, continuing to rank among Australia’s top employers. Employers are classified by industry in the Australian Financial Review and measured by user behaviour on GradConnection, Australia’s largest graduate jobs site.
In addition to the Top100 Graduate Employers awards, thousands of university students applied to be a part of the GradConnection Future Leaders competition. We are particularly proud of current HR Intern Winnie Jiang, and former interns Larry Unguroiu and David Brockwell who were nominated as Future Leaders in Marketing, IT, Business, and Consulting.

According to ANZ Early Professional Recruitment Lead Brenda Spencer, IBM’s sustained success in the graduate space is due to the team’s dynamic hiring strategy, stating that: “while we still have a small number of niche roles that we would recruit for with existing technical skills, the vast majority of our recruitment in the graduate space is for potential. Technology is changing all the time so we look for people who will continually learn to help us stay ahead of the market.
To remain competitive in the early professional space, the team incorporated new, exciting changes into the graduate recruitment process in 2017. The IBM assessment centres were reinvigorated to include Design Thinking and Agile activities, as well as a puzzling IBM-themed escape room. In order to market our graduate program to more diverse candidates, the team facilitated Femme in STEM events, where university students participated in gamified workshops and met with high-achieving female IBM graduates. These efforts, as well as a renewed focus on social media and university relationship management, will continue in 2018 to ensure that IBM continues to be a leading force in graduate attraction and recruitment.
In transforming the recruitment process to be more streamlined, innovative, and enjoyable, the team has been able to attract more candidates with diverse backgrounds and ideas. The most exciting candidates have experiences outside of university; whether that be part time work, semesters abroad, volunteering experience, or sporting achievements. Through hiring well-rounded students, our incoming graduates join our business with open minds and the willingness to try anything. These qualities make early professional hires an invaluable part of our teams for their unique points of view and willingness to restlessly reinvent the way things have always been done.
