IBMer Spotlight: Meet Waka Kobayashi

Waka

We grab a coffee with IBMers from around the world, and share our chat in this weekly spotlight series. This week you can meet Waka, from IBM US.

In the morning, I like my coffee…
Freshly brewed iced or hot black coffee.

When I get up to go to work, I look forward to…
solving problems and learning something new everyday.

I am responsible for…
Managing a team and delivery on a project for FEMA. The project consists of 14 different Enterprise implementations and development projects to be completed in a year. There’s never a dull moment:)

My typical day…
involves leading daily stand ups with my team, having architecture discussions, planning for the next deployment, and communicating with my clients and stakeholders. I also fit in business development for the IBM Asian Business Resource Group (BRG), do case interviews for potential IBM candidates, work with IBM Recruitment on our strategy for our internship program and CbD program, and make videos for IBM Marketing!

The coolest part of my job is…
being part of the development of new technology at IBM around the world.

The biggest challenge I have…
is having enough time!

Most memorable moment in my career…
One of my first projects I worked on since joining IBM was a “First of a Kind” project where we had to deploy a solution across the enterprise and work with over 150+ stakeholders. I worked with an amazing team and we had the solution deployed in 6 months and were able to grow IBM’s business.

The second was getting deployed with my FEMA client to Alabama during Hurricane Harvey to deploy the IBM Mobile (Derived Credentials)solution to aid in disaster relief and security. It was really rewarding to work alongside my client and know that our solution was helping in the disaster efforts.

Top piece of career advice…
Don’t be afraid to ask! Worst case the answer is no.
Every experience is an opportunity. Make it count.
